Top Swimmable Beaches in Los Cabos

September 29, 2023

Los Cabos is known for its incredible natural scenery, including its beautiful beaches. If you plan on swimming during your Cabo San Lucas vacation, you’ll want to check out some of the area’s top swimmable beaches.

Medano Beach

Medano Beach is big in terms of its size and its amenities. This is the place to go for the beach social scene in Cabo San Lucas.  The two-mile long Los Cabos beach is a popular spot for swimming in the turquoise water or sunning out on the soft white sand. It’s also packed with restaurants, bars, and places to pick up souvenirs.

While you’re there, you can rent kayaks or wave runners to get out on the water, do some parasailing, or join a game of beach volleyball. This is a tourist hot spot, so parking can be tricky. Your best bet is to use a car service or a taxi to reach Medano Beach. You can access the sand and water through any of the hotels and restaurants found along the beachfront.

Palmilla Beach

Playa Palmilla is a one-mile-long stretch of sand that’s great for families, thanks in part to its calm waters. This Los Cabos beach is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, or just kicking back in the sand, relaxing, and enjoying the views. If you’re planning to go to Palmilla Beach on the weekends, your best bet is to try and arrive early to get a palapa. The late morning is also when the fishermen come in, or you can try your own hand at surf-fishing while you’re there.

If it’s whale season, you’ll want to keep your eyes open and your camera ready. Beach access is available at KM 27 Transpeninsular Highway. Take the exit at Palmilla. There’s some good parking close to the beach, so you probably won’t have to walk very far once you arrive.

Lover’s Beach

Also called Playa del Amor, Lover’s Beach is known for its towering rocks and its incredible views. Not only is the setting stunning, but Lover’s Beach also has clear water, making it easy to spot tropical fish and even an occasional sea lion out in the water.

When you go, be sure to pack a picnic lunch, some water and refreshments, plus all the gear you’ll need for a day at the beach, especially if you want to snorkel as well as swim while you’re there. The best and most inexpensive way to get to Lover’s Beach is to take one of the pangas, or rather water taxis, from Medano Beach or from the Cabo San Lucas Marina.

La Playita Beach

A favorite of locals, especially on Sundays, La Playita Beach has a roped-off swimming area at the harbor entrance. It also has a natural beach, which is a great place for swimming, surfing, skim-boarding, or fishing.

For those with kids, there’s a play structure, plus you’ll also find some palapas for shade and well-kept bathrooms at the beach. Access La Playita Beach at the east entrance of the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San Jose del Cabo.
