If you’re in the mood for surfing while in Cabo, you’re in luck. There are several great spots for surfing in the region, and you don’t necessarily even have to be an expert.
Playa Acapulquito
Found in San Jose del Cabo, Playa Acapulquito is also called “Old Man’s Beach”. Don’t let the name fool you, this beach is prime for surfing. The beach is known to host surfing competitions, but even beginners can get some practice at Playa Acapulquito. Keep in mind, the waves are bigger in the summer than they are in the winter. For those more skilled, the beach offers long rides and it’s a great spot for long-boarders.
You can rent surfboards at the beach, or even some stand-up paddleboards at one of the nearby surf shops. Although people generally flock to Playa Acapulquito for surfing, it’s also a good place for swimming and snorkeling in the winter when the waves aren’t quite so large. Beachgoers have access at KM 28 Transpeninsular Highway.
Costa Azul Beach
Costa Azul Beach is another spot to check out if you’re trying to catch some waves. If you’re there in June, you’re likely to catch some pros in action during the annual Los Cabos Open of Surf at Zippers. The large surf festival is just one of the highlights of visiting Costa Azul Beach. Advanced surfers will appreciate the expert-level reef break known as Zippers. There are two more breaks in the area, too, including La Roca.
While surfers are known to come year-round, the biggest waves come in the summer. You can rent surfboards at the beach. If you’re not experienced, you can sign up for surfing lessons, plus the area has some restaurants and cabana rentals. To access the beach, take KM 28 Transpeninsular Highway, then take a right at the bridge, and stay on that until you see the beach.
Monuments Beach
Monuments Beach, or rather Playa Monumento, isn’t very large, but it’s popular with surfers. This is the closest surf you’ll find to Cabo San Lucas, and an easy cab ride from downtown. If you’re not an expert surfer, or at least more advanced, you may want to skip this beach for surfing. It’s a left point break, so it’s sometimes a bit too much for less accomplished surfers.
You’ll find access at KM 5.5 Transpeninsular Highway. That’s the entrance to Misiones del Cabo. Keep in mind, you’ll have to park before you get to the main entrance and walk the rest of the way to the beach.
Nine Palms
Nine Palms sits in the East Cape, which is about 45-minutes from Downtown San Jose del Cabo. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced surfer, this is the place to go. It’s a popular spot for outdoor recreation, and you’ll often see people surfing, swimming, or snorkeling at the beach.
The East Cape has its own vibe, so this is the perfect place to visit if you don’t want to worry about staying on schedule. To access the beach, take East Cape Road, north of La Fortuna.
