Many people come to Los Cabos for outdoor adventures and water sports, but there’s another side of Cabo that’s worth exploring. The San Jose del Cabo Art Walk is one of the most popular events, traditionally held between November and June. This weekly event occurs on Thursday evenings from five to nine and it’s an extremely popular destination for those visiting Los Cabos during certain months of the year.
The event has grown so popular that the main street is even closed to traffic on Thursday evenings during the Walk to allow people to stroll at their leisure through the Gallery District and stop to enjoy some of the local art galleries and artistry. Organized and promoted by the Gallery District Association, the idea is to draw in tourists and local art enthusiasts to some of the back streets of San Jose del Cabo for the opportunity to gaze at artwork, listen to live music, and even dine at some of the local restaurants.
It's common for some of the art galleries located here to put on openings of new exhibitions or even have special, “artist in attendance” events showcased during Art Walk. The bustling evening sometimes even branches out, too, to include other parts of Downtown San Jose, but the main draw is, of course, what’s happening inside the Gallery District. Not only does the evening offer the opportunity to view some incredible local artwork, but also, perhaps, give tourists a place to purchase something truly special and unique to take back home.
The District is home to several higher-end art galleries with everything from prints and photography to original paintings, sculptures, and jewelry on display. Much of it is made by local, national, or even, sometimes, international artists. Depending on the time of year you visit, the traditional holiday season often means the bonus of seeing the city square decorated for Christmas.
For many visitors, Art Walk presents the opportunity to see an entirely new side of Los Cabos, with its walkable streets and its slower pace. To reach the Gallery District, head to the area behind the church and the historic main square of San Jose del Cabo. On Thursday nights, it may be easiest just to follow the crowds to reach this popular evening destination. It’s one more truly unique option for visitors in search of the ultimate Cabo experience.
