Our Best Tips for Getting Around in Cabo

February 01, 2023

If you’re wondering about how to get around Cabo once you’ve arrived, we’ve come up with a short list of some of our best tips:

Taxis

In terms of taxis, you’ll find the rates vary. We recommend you negotiate the rate with the taxi driver for everyone in your group before getting into the cab and heading to your next destination. Keep in mind, you do have the ability to bargain for a cheaper rate. As far as water taxis, they take off from the Cabo San Lucas Marina enroute to Medano Beach or Lover’s Beach near The Arch. If you choose this option, it’s CASH ONLY, so come prepared.

Buses

Another option is the bus. In Los Cabos, the public bus service is “Suburcabos”. It runs between the two towns each day, with service starting at 5am and running until around 9:30-10pm. The safest option is to walk to one of the official, designated bus stops, where you’ll find some seating and shade. You can, however, flag a bus down from just about anywhere along the highway.

Keep in mind, the buses do only travel along the main highway, and they pass through each stop at approximately 20-minute intervals. It costs about 32 pesos to travel between the two towns, but it’s less if you don’t go the entire way. Again, it’s CASH ONLY to take the bus, and the drivers don’t carry change, so it’s best to try and have exact change to pay your fare.

Ubers

If you’d rather take an Uber, you do need to know they’re not allowed at the airport. Depending on where you’re staying, availability is usually hit or miss. Another thing to consider is they don’t have UBER XL in Cabo. Most Ubers can only fit three people, but occasionally they fit up to four guests. If your villa is in a gated community, be sure to alert security so they know to let the car pass through. While Uber is sometimes an inexpensive alternative for getting around Cabo, it’s not always the most reliable.

Private Transportation

Above all else, we recommend using private transportation. It’s sometimes tricky for companies that don’t travel to our properties very often because there aren’t street names or house names in Cabo. Instead, they use lot numbers. If you’d like for Sun Cabo to arrange private transportation, we require 48-hours’ notice. That’s because the drivers need time to secure permits, so plan ahead. You pay with a credit card, and private transportation can be used to transport you to the airport, dinner, shopping, and more.

Driving

If you’re planning on driving in Mexico yourself, and this is your first time, we have a few tips to help you out. Our best advice is to drive defensively. Look out for one-way streets, and keep in mind, local drivers don’t always stop at stop signs. Sometimes they just slow down and look for traffic. Also, carrying cash is important because a majority of gas stations are CASH ONLY. They do usually accept US dollars or Pesos.

When it’s time to fill up, try using the phrase “llena (yayna) premium, por favor”. That translates to “fill with premium, please”. Most of the time, the attendant will understand phrases such as “20 dollars” or “200 pesos”. If there’s any doubt, just show which type of money you plan to use. It’s customary to tip your attendant 10 pesos.
