A Key to Tipping in Cabo

January 12, 2022

While tipping is optional in certain parts of the world, tipping is a strong part of Mexican culture. It’s customary to receive warm and friendly service in Mexico. In return, guests are generally expected to tip. A tip is called “propina” in Spanish.

At Sun Cabo Vacations, we know our staff members greatly appreciate being recognized for exceptional service. While tips are not expected, they are always welcomed by our staff members. To help you better understand tipping, we came up with a common list of situations in which you may want to tip our in-villa service staff and also tip when you’re out on the town.

In-Villa Tipping Guide:

  • Concierge Service: Depending on the level of service, a tip of $20 or more is appreciated.
  • Butlers: Typically, a tip of $20 to $25 per day is common, depending on the service level.
  • Private Drivers: For door-to-door service that’s on-time and safe, we recommend tipping $10 to $20 per trip.
  • Villa Maids: They ensure everything in your villa is clean and tidy. A tip of $2 to $5 per day, per person, is acceptable.
  • Private Chefs: Depending on the service, tips ranging from 15-percent to 20-percent are greatly appreciated.

Tipping Out on the Town:

  • Restaurants: A tip of at least 10-percent is usual, with up to 20-percent for exceptional service.
  • Taxi Drivers: It’s common to tip $2 to $5.
  • Grocery Baggers: If someone bags your groceries, a common tip is $2 to $3.
These are just a few common situations you may come across in Los Cabos, where you may want to leave a tip. A genuine thank you is always welcome for great service. Monetary gratuity is just another way of recognizing staff members for helping to make your visit to Los Cabos remarkable and memorable.
